Practical safety guidelines for automotive and repair shops

I don’t know much about you guys, but working in the automotive industry has been a rewarding journey for me. A journey which has given me a lot to think for. I was blessed to work with some of the finest in the country, from some of the best companies.

Nonetheless, if you are a student just like I was a few years ago, you will be spending a lot of your time in an auto-shop than anywhere else. Every individual starts his/her career from the auto-shop where you get to learn the art of repairing the vehicles.

You learn about engines, fixes, leakages, and a lot of things that will help you shape up your career. Subsequently, many vehicle companies follow suit and hire knowledgeable workers to work in their automotive company.

While the career can be rewarding, the owners and the staff at the automotive industry need to be on their toes and see if all the possible safety guidelines are being followed at all costs. One of the reasons why it is so vital is because safety guidelines ensure that the staff and the workers are not harming themselves, no possible injury is taking place, and all the vehicles they are working on is getting a trusted service.

Today, I will be sharing with you an extensive list of safety guidelines that you should follow when you are working in a dealership or an automotive repair shop. Please read these guidelines correctly, and make sure that all of them are implemented.

If these guidelines are already being followed, then please ignore, but if not, talk to your supervisor or the person in command, and let them know how crucial it is to follow the health and safety standards. It will not only improve your store ratings, but the customers will also appreciate that you are adhering to the safety regulations.

Safety guidelines for auto-repair technicians

For shop safety

  1. Always wear custom auto-mechanics uniforms, safety goggles, gloves, and other protective equipment when working around the vehicles.
  2. Dispose of all the oil, gasoline, and other flammable materials in individual containers. All these containers have ‘flammable waste’ or just ‘flammable’ written on them.
  3. When you are lifting heavy-duty items, use the following guidelines.
  • Grab them firmly and ensure that your back is straight.
  • Lift the object by using both of your hands. This gives you easy support.
  • Keep the object close to your body. Make sure that your elbows are tightly sealed for precise lifting.
  • Turn your body against the feet. Don’t twist and turn.

For vehicle safety

  1. Turn the headlights on when driving the vehicle inside your shop.
  2. If you are driving inside the shop area, keep the speed at lowest.
  3. If you are on delivery, obey all the traffic rules and signals. Follow the signs and warnings.
  4. Always drive up and down the slope and not across the slope.
  5. Never mount a moving vehicle. Please wait for it to stop. Be patient.

Safety guidelines for staff and employees at the automotive shop

General rules

  1. If your auto repair shop has an emergency exit or stairwells, don’t block or hold them up. Ensure that in a case of emergency, safety equipment like fire extinguishers, fire alarms, and PPE equipment is accessible to the workers to disperse the situation.
  2. If you have any tools, items, or accessories stored above your head, you can access them with the help of a ladder or a stool.
  3. Place all the danger and safety warnings and signs. Ask all the staff to follow them religiously.
  4. Never stand in front of closed doors. Leave them for emergency evacuations.
  5. When you are entering the automotive store, clean your shoes from grease, mud, water, and other substances that may cause to trip or tumble.
  6. Walk around slimy, sticky, and wet areas if needed. Otherwise, avoid them at all costs.

Office safety guidelines

  1. Close all the doors and drawers immediately after its use.
  2. It is unprofessional to kick objects out of your way. Pick them up and place them out of your reach.
  3. For easy access, the best practice is to place all the heavy files and folders on the bottom of the drawers.
  4. All the sharp stationery and tools should be placed upside down for safety.
  5. Keep your table clean. This helps to improve productivity and efficiency.
