Early American literature consists of writings during the colonial period. In Massachusetts, great Early American Literature was plentiful. The state produced writers like Anne Bradstreet, the first published female poet in America, and Cotton Mather, who wrote various pieces on theology, science, history, and religion.

During the 19th century, Massachusetts was a hotspot for the creation of transcendentalism writing, which is a philosophy believing that individuals are inherently good and should be self-reliant because society, its institutions, and politics were corrupting the minds and abilities of the population.

Massachusetts produced world-renowned transcendentalists such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Louisa May Alcott.

20th-century literature contains writings published between 1901 and 2000, and again, Massachusetts was the home to famous writers during this time.
